Geographical location

Vespella is situated in the Tarragonès county, and it has an area of 18.24 Km2. It is crossed by the Serralta and the Mas d'en Plana "torrentes, and by the Gaià river, that keeps the water in the Pantà de Gaià (the Gaià Dam). The dam is shared between three villages: Renau, Vilabella and El Catllar. The village has a rugged relief, because there are some buttresses in the southern side of the Montferri Mountain Range. Some of its hills are at a height of 256 metres.

Economical activities

The main activity in Vespella is the agriculture, although only the 20% of the township fields are cultivable lands. The rest of the township is formed by grazing fields, the "garriga" (scrub), and the woods. The most important crops are the vineyard, the olive, hazel and the carob trees, and the cereals. The vegetation is the typical Mediterranean vegetation, and the lands are unirrigated lands, Vespella de Gaià is a good promoter of the ecological industries within its township.

It encourages the installation of all the industries that use the natural energetic resources and the use of materials that used to be important in the industries, but that are not anymore in them. We have the first industry in the country that reuses the elements that constitute a cable (any type of cables). This industry is the Triturats de Cables de Gaià S.A. that belongs to the Zambrano brothers. The industry that belongs to Pere Maria Sanromà, Perforacions Sanromà, F i M., S.L., extracts water from unbelievable places. The expert in oceans Roland W. Mattheissen directs the Institut Oceanogràfic del Mediterrani, that is nine Km. from the coast. There is a bakery that supplies the bread for the whole county, called the Fleca J.A. Sevilla; S.L. Josep Font is a craftsman lathes the wood. We have made a reference to the construction firms (as Bargalló, Doblado and Parra), the cattle-breeding exploitation (as Mas d'en Mestre S.A.T.), and the restaurants. Some of them are opened all the year (as the Bar-Restaurant del Casal and the Bar-Restaurant Sant Miquel), and some of them are only opened in some seasons (as the Restaurant Mas d'Enric, S.L.). There is nowadays a restaurant that is looking for a new owner that brings it back to the activity that it used to have.

In any case, even though this wide supply of industries, Vespella wants to specialise in the tourism sector. Thus, it is creating a set of infrastructures for being able to organising exhibitions and art meetings. One of the topics is to receive a higher number of visitors, and that are not seasonal tourists but permanent. The program that the Town Council has proposed consists on different subjects, which form an alternative and original program. These are: Programación de Exposiciones de Arte Contemporáneo, from 1993 to 1996; Premio Nacional de Poesía Visual, from 1993 and presided every year by Joan Brossa; Festival de Músicas Especiales Sant Miquel de Vespella, from 1994; Printing the Vespella de Gaià News Cultural Magazine from 1994; Curso de las Artes y los Artistas, from 1995; Museo de Instalaciones Artísticas al Aire Libre (MIAVG) from 1995; Premio Nacional de Acciones Artísticas, from1996. This supply constitutes the heritage of Vespella for starting this project, and it encourages them to carry on fighting for the called "Denominación de Calidad" of Vespella.
